Ohio Soccer Shuts Out Navy To Remain Unbeaten
< < Back to ?p=270616ATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) — The Ohio Bobcats were able to get a full match in Thursday under clear skies after Sunday’s shortened matchup with James Madison, which was declared a “No Contest” after storms stopped the game after one half.
Ohio hosted the Naval Academy as both teams looked to remain unbeaten on the season.
Navy could only float for so long in the match before sinking with six minutes remaining in the opening half. Ohio freshman Daelynn Rosser found the back-side post for the only goal of the match.
It was the Bobcats (3-0) coming away with a 1-0 victory over the Mids (2-1). More impressively, Ohio is yet to allow a goal this season.
Senior goalkeeper Sam Wexell was impressive for the Bobcats once again as she saved all three shots that came her way. In comparison, the Bobcats put nine shots on net.
The final minute was pure chaos as Navy had multiple attempts to break some Bobcats’ hearts. However, Wexell and the defense held strong to preserve the shutout.
Ohio head coach Aaron Rodgers had high praise for his team’s defensive effort.
“We have a lot of senior leadership back there,” Rodgers said. “Olivia Darrow came in and played tremendously in replacement of Morgan Collica. Ella (Bianco) and Olivia Sensky at centerback have done a tremendous job and have a lot of experience and leadership and then Sam Wexell in goal.”
The Bobcats will look to carry their momentum on the road as they travel to Eastern Kentucky on Sunday at 1 p.m.
“It’s going to be a big challenge. Eastern Kentucky’s a solid team,” Rodgers said. “They’re coming off a win against Northern Illinois on Sunday. They don’t play (Thursday) so they’re going to have some rested legs, but I think we have the momentum.”
