Futhey Duo Continues To Dominate, Secures 47-28 Victory Over Portsmouth West
< < Back to ?p=271526WAVERLY, Ohio (WOUB) – Led by the motivating pre-game speech of Coach Chris Crabtree, the Waverly Tigers (4-0) came into the game looking to extend their already impressive undefeated streak. However, the Portsmouth West Senators (3-2) proved that this would be no easy task.
On their opening drive, the Senators advanced down the field for QB Mitchell Irwin to throw on 4th and 10 for the first score of the game. Irwin would throw for 250 yards over the contest with an average of 12.5 yards per completion. The celebration was short lived though as Waverly would score only two minutes later from a screen pass to JT Barnett.
Beginning the second quarter, the Tigers would snag an interception, putting them in perfect position for Wyatt Crabtree to take the wildcat snap and drive it left for a touchdown. This quarter was a showcase of offensive highlights. For every Senators touchdown, the Tigers came back only minutes later to tie the score.
With just 0:18 left on the clock before the half, Irwin found Ashton Klaiber wide open for a touchdown that they had hoped would cap off the 1st half. However, Waverly had other plans as, in just three plays, QB Wade Futhey dotted up his brother, Will Futhey, to tie the score 21-21 with a single second left on the clock.
Another halftime speech by Coach Crabtree would propel the Tigers to dominate in the second half. The final score of the game: Waverly 47, Portsmouth West 28.
Portsmouth West is scheduled to face the Minford Falcons in their next contest. Waverly heads to Lucasville to battle the Valley Indians.
