< < Back to jackson-unable-to-stop-nations-leading-passer-as-ironmen-drop-their-rematch-against-the-broncosWAVERLY, Ohio (WOUB) — Round three of the playoffs for the Ironmen puts them in a rematch against Drew Novak and the Western Brown Broncos. Last time the Ironmen lost 33-28, but they need a win to keep their season alive. The 10-2 Jackson Ironmen faced an equally 10-2 Western Brown team on neutral turf in Waverly. Both teams had seen each other earlier in the season and were hoping to come out on top in the second game. In the end, Jackson fell victim to Western Brown’s quarterback, Drew Novak. Novak led a very well-run offense that found the endzone often and won the game 35-28.
The first half started with a touchdown on the Ironmen’s’ very first drive, as quarterback Jacob Winters hit wideout Brodie Butcher from 22 yards out to open up the scoring. Jackson linebacker Grant Mastin jumped a throw from Drew Novak on the following drive, but the Broncos defense was stout in a quick-change situation and forced the Ironmen to punt it right back. Novak bounced right back after that and led a 73-yard drive that ended in a 2-yard rushing touchdown of his own to tie the game at seven. Jackson’s offense answered that touchdown with a familiar connection as Winters again found Butcher for the score, this time from 14 yards out.
The back and forth continued with another Western Brown touchdown. The Broncos kept it on the ground, but this time it was running back Zachery Chisman with the score to again knot the game, this time at 14.
Western Brown would double down late in the first half. The passing centric offense would once again keep it on the ground for the touchdown with Novak punching in his second from two yards out.
Jackson responded quickly to tie it up at 21 with Tristan Prater turning a short catch into a long 53-yard touchdown just 41 seconds before the end of the half.
The third quarter came and went with no scoring from either team, but not even two minutes into the final frame Novak finally took to the skies for a touchdown finding his brother, wideout, Dylan Novak for the 24-yard touchdown.
Jackson would even up the scoreboard with a touchdown from Eli Broermann with a little under six minutes left in the game.
The final score came on an 18-yard toss from Drew Novak to wideout Logan Campbell that put the Broncos up a touchdown with 1:51 left to play. Western Brown’s defense held strong on the following drive giving the offense the ball back to end the game.
Even though Drew Novak only had two passing touchdowns in the game, the Broncos leaned heavily on his arm throughout the whole contest. Western Brown continually spread Jackson out by going into empty formations and let Drew Novak take over. Novak threw for 422 yards and completed 30 of his 45 passing attempts. The Ironmen just couldn’t contain Novak, and he was able to pick apart the defense all day.
The Ironmen will look to next season with returning quarterback Jacob Winters and offensive star Cade Wolford. The Ironmen finished the season at 10-3. Meanwhile the Broncos are looking ahead to a showdown against the Granville Blue Aces who come off a one-point victory against London.
