ATHENS, OH – It’s that time of year again and WOUB Public Media’s Learning Lab is helping children in our area get ready to go back to school. Last week, the Learning Lab participated in two community events to provide backpacks and supplies for students in Athens County and in Barnesville, Ohio.
The Athens County event was held on the square in Nelsonville and is put on by the Athens County Department of Job and Family Services, as well as the Hocking Athens Perry Community Action Agency.
“The backpacks, books and resources we distributed are one way WOUB is supporting families to help their children succeed this year,” said WOUB Educational Services Manager Deborah Brewer. “It was fun to see children and families excited about going back to school. It was a great opportunity for us to share resources from PBS Kids to help families prepare for the new academic year.”
Brewer, WOUB Childhood/Elementary Education Specialist Lisa Kinnard and WOUB Community Engagement Manager Cheri Russo distributed PBS Kids stickers and pins for younger children, as well as earbuds for older students. The Learning Lab also provided a station where children could have their picture taken and then decorate a frame to go around it.
“The children were very excited to get their picture taken and decorate a frame to put it in,” said Brewer. “One middle school-aged girl told us she was going to put it in her locker.”
The Barnesville event was put on by the Title 1 Teachers in Barnesville and the Barnesville Area Chamber of Commerce. WOUB Educational Consultant Lori Pringle, her daughter Brooke, and WOUB General Manager Mark Brewer handed out items to students and families there.
This work in the community was thanks in part to the Ohio Learns 360 initiative. Ohio’s PBS stations, through a partnership with the Ohio Department of Education, are working with local summer and after-school programs to address disruptions to learning caused during the COVID-19 pandemic. The initiative will provide families, along with after-school and summer programs with PBS resources, including standards-based curriculum and materials, virtual field trips, interactive video programs, community events and more, all designed to accelerate student learning and support the state’s most vulnerable learners in kindergarten through fifth grade.
