Sheridan sits atop the MVL-Big after taking down Tri-Valley
< < Back to sheridan-sits-atop-the-mvl-big-after-taking-down-tri-valleyDRESDEN, Ohio (WOUB) — The top two teams in the MVL Big School Division faced off Friday night in a game that would decide the division champion; this game lived up to the hype.
Both Sheridan and Tri Valley came into this one with 7-1 records; however, Sheridan had the edge in conference play at 4-0 with Tri Valley at 3-0. With Sheridan set to square off against New Lexington next week, this game was their last conference matchup, meaning a win would declare them MVL Big School Division champions. Tri Valley, on the other hand, will face John Glenn next week for one final conference showdown.
The game started off extremely slow, with defense being the story. With one minute left in the first half, Spencer Showalter was sent out for a field goal attempt and missed wide left; however, a costly running into the kicker penalty set up a seven-yard touchdown pass from Caden Sheridan to Drew Boyer.
Watching their defense give up a score prompted Tri Valley to do the exact same. With under a minute to work with, Jayden Walker put his team in position to score with a massive kick return. It was he himself who ended up scoring on the drive, catching a one-yard touchdown pass from Max Lyell, evening the score at the end of the first half 7-7.
The second half was much of the same in terms of a defensive battle. Several three and outs would run the clock all the way down to the 1:30 mark before Jayden Wallace broke free down the left side for the Scotties, rushing 16 yards and diving his way into the endzone. This gave Tri Valley the lead in a must win game 13-7 due to a missed extra point.
It was almost a whole quarter before we saw any more points go on the board. Sheridan’s defense held strong despite watching their offense sputter, and that proved big for the Generals as with 2:39 left to go in the game, Reid Packer was able to find Drew Boyer once again for the score. This time it was an eight-yard pass. Sheridan took the lead 14-13 and was able to stop a game-winning drive by the Scotties, winning this one, and with it, the conference title.
