The first episode of Soundwaves features Toecutter at The Union in Athens

ATHENS, OH – WOUB Culture is releasing the first episode of its new digital live music performance series Soundwaves on August 23rd. The show features regional artists, regional venues and regional information that you probably have never heard before.

Soundwaves will give viewers an insider’s perspective and knowledge of the locally vibrant music scene of southeast Ohio and give further exposure to its artists,” said WOUB Culture Reporter Emily Votaw. “Soundwaves takes the Radio A Sessions that WOUB produced prior to the pandemic to the next level.”

“We are excited to leave the confines of the WOUB studios in Athens and record local artists in unique venues throughout the region while providing information and context to tell the cultural story of this area in a way it hasn’t been done before,” said Production Coordinator Josh Miller.

The series will be released online and primarily showcases local and regional musical artists performing on stages at various locations around the region giving WOUB the opportunity not only to highlight music and artists unique to our region, but also the towns and spaces in which the music is played. Each episode will include little-known facts about the artists and about the venue which will appear in text boxes during the musical performance.

The first episode will feature Toecutter performing on the stage at The Union in Athens. Fresh off a performance at the 2023 Nelsonville Music Festival, ToeCutter is raucous enough to be “experimental pop-rock,” but they’ve got a sense of humor, so they say they’re “manic country dream punk.” Their style and history will be explained with the supporting facts that will appear during the performance. Facts about The Union will also be sprinkled throughout the video.

The next two episodes, featuring Wished Bone and Big Fat Head, will be released on August 30 and September 6 and were also recorded at The Union. Wished Bone is the performance alias of musician Ashley Rhodus. Her mystical take on low-fi folk pop has garnered nearly 12,000 followers on Spotify. Big Fat Head is an occasionally irreverent hard rocking group from Columbus who just released their PP & NEMO #1 EP. You’ll recognize vocalist Nate Hervey from Athens-based “garbage” rockers The Wastemen.

Each episode will be accompanied by audio interviews and editorial write ups on the WOUB Culture page that give updated information about album releases and upcoming shows. Excerpts of the performances may also be used on WOUB TV and Radio.

“We are thrilled to be able to amplify the original music and unique venues of our region in a way that explains the special culture and history found here,” said WOUB Producer/Director Chris Flanery. “We can’t wait to see where Soundwaves takes us next.”
