WOUB Learning Lab offers MOLLY OF DENALI ™ PBS KIDS Family & Community Learning literacy workshop series in Athens
< < Back toSeries is free for families and children
ATHENS, OH – Families and children in the region can explore literacy from the PBS KIDS series, MOLLY OF DENALI ™ thanks to a partnership with the Stevens Literacy Center and WOUB Public Media’s Learning Lab. The PBS KIDS Family and Community Learning (FCL) workshops use creative play and exploration to introduce kids and grown-ups to digital and tangible tools that can be used to develop knowledge, practices and perspectives. The learning focus for this workshop series is literacy and informational text, which has the main purpose of conveying information. It’s free for families and is made possible by the Ohio Learns 360 project and a grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
The workshops will be presented at the Stevens Literacy Center inside the Patton College of Education Building at 100 E. Union Street in Athens. There are six sessions in the series which will be held on February 26, March 4, 11 (take home bags will be provided this week due to spring break), 18, 25 and April 1. The sessions run from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. It’s open to children 5 to 8 years old and their families who can attend all six sessions in the series. Space is limited to the first 10 families to register.
FCL is a series of workshops that engage families in active, hands-on learning experiences designed for families with young children. Through child-led activities and experiences, the workshops aim to foster collaboration, communication, and problem-solving skills among family members.
“Children are innately curious and creative,” said Childhood/Elementary Education Specialist Lisa Kinnard. “They want to make sense of the world around them. The grown-ups in children’s lives have an important role to play in supporting the development of the skills and practices that will allow a child’s curiosity to flourish.”
The FCL workshops are an opportunity for families to play and learn together, while demonstrating for grown-ups the best practices in guiding playful learning at home.
“Families that attend all six sessions will be entered into a drawing for a Lenovo tablet,” said Kinnard.
