After a scoreless first quarter that saw the Bobcats stave off a furious Brown offense which came close to scoring on multiple occasions, Bear midfielder Lucy Adams finally broke through with a goal with 3:14 left in the second quarter to put the Bears in front, 1-0. Brown capitalized on their defense’s strong performance that kept Ohio in check the entire game, with forward Lexi Pelligrino coming through with a goal of her own with only 14 seconds left before halftime to extend the Bears’ lead.
The third quarter saw scoring from both sides. Brown midfielder Mia Karine Myklebust scoring less than 30 seconds into the second half to make it 3-0 Bears with Zoe Lawrence adding the assist. Myklebust was credited with an assist only two minutes later along with fellow midfielder Juliette Meijaard, helping Pelligrino score her second goal of the game to pad the lead.
Ohio Back Anouk Plaehn scored the only goal of the afternoon for the Bobcats later in the third quarter with an assist from Emily Risser.
Ultimately, the Brown game plan kept Ohio from putting together a comeback, giving the Bobcats only a handful of opportunities to score before the clock ran out. Ohio mustered up only four shots on goal during the contest.
“Things we talked about in our pregame meeting didn’t get executed. So, I guess going back to the drawing board and figuring out how to explain it better so they can execute it.” Bobcats head coach Ali Johnstone said postgame.
“Macy [Lotze] played really well. She was solid back there. I know they scored four but to be honest, they missed a lot that went past that far post.” Johnstone said about Ohio goalie Macy Lotze. Ohio recorded 15 saves in Saturday’s game, with Brown taking 24 shots on goal.
“We made an adjustment at the half. It’s too bad that they scored early because I thought we had adjusted pretty well.” Johnstone said. “We talk about communication but it’s so vague. I could hear a pin drop on that side so it’s trying to find the energy inside to communicate more because if you stop communicating, you must run more,” Johnstone said.
The Bobcats are off for the week and will travel to Farmsville, Virginia to continue MAC play against Longwood University next Sunday at 1 p.m.
