AMANDA, Ohio (WOUB) – The MSL-Buckeye League kicked off league play tonight with a bang across the conference, a big highlight of which was the Amanda-Clearcreek Aces’ first home game against the Bloom-Carroll Bulldogs. Both teams came into the game 1-2, but one showed dominance. The top dog tonight was Bloom-Carroll, which won the game 16-6 in a low-scoring battle of defensive might.

The only score for the first half was a field goal for the Bulldogs, after a possession spanning both halves, scored 3 points on fourth-and-6 by kicker Rusty Hutchinson. Scoring was then put on hold until the third quarter, with two touchdowns by the Bulldogs, the second scored with less than two minutes left by senior QB Matthew Cline to bring the game to 16-0.

This is the kind of game that defensive coordinators the world over dream of, with no touchdowns in the first half but an interception caught by junior RB/DB Nick Holland bringing the ball back to the Aces.

In the second quarter, a strip fumble in the second quarter by DB Bodie Martin for the Aces brought the game back after the Bulldogs had the ball for a full third of the quarter. The Aces only ran for 27 yards for the whole first half, getting stopped time and time again by the Bulldog’s defense. Bloom-Carroll held onto the ball for a large chunk of the game, but had two separate drives early on that could have resulted in touchdowns that were turned over to the Aces.

The Aces scored with a little over five minutes left of the fourth quarter and missed the PAT, leading to a final score of 16-6. Next week, the newly 2-2 Bulldogs have a potential for some great conference play against the Fairfield Union Falcons, and the Amanda-Clearcreek Aces have a chance to improve their record against the Circleville Tigers.
