WAVERLY, Ohio (WOUB)– The Alexander Spartans swept the Westfall Mustangs in the second round of the tournament.

The Alexander Spartans started off the first set with electric energy all around the court.  Spartan Meena Juedes kicked started the fire for her team with huge kills in the front row, and a big block after some errors on both sides of the net. Westfall was able to keep the energy close after capitalizing on multiple errors that Alexander struggled with.  But Spartan Macie Hubbard put a stop to the Mustangs with a massive block forcing Westfall to take a timeout.

That timeout helped to ice out the Mustangs and Spartan Ava McCall had an impressive ace during a long serving run. Juedes continues to be on fire in the front row, even working in some defensive back row passes as well. Alexanders’ Lila Moser also continued her front row swings to round out the first set. Spartans took set one, 25 to18.

Going into the second set, it was clear that the Mustangs were low after losing the first set. But Mustang Madi Riddick had a huge kill to tie it up early in the set. Spartans Moser and Hubbard battled back with a big outside block. Alexander struggled with some serve receive, and multiple errors from Alexander started a different momentum switch for Westfall.

Spartan Maddy Penrod helped bring her team back up with back-to-back kills, and Alexander got right back into their groove. Juedes continued all around the court, placing kills and a tip deep into Westfall’s side of the court. Penrod took the second set for the Spartans, and Alexander won 25 to 19.

Similar energy continued from Alexander beginning in the third set. The Spartans were able to keep the momentum going off multiple Mustang errors. However, Adrian Moehl for the Mustangs did shine in the middle with huge swings that challenged the Spartan defense.

Alexander was able to take home the set with their strong offense in the front row, from Moser to Juedes. Penrod took home the set again for the Spartans with another kill and some Mustang errors.

The Spartans will continue their playoff run on Saturday against the Wheelersberg Raiders.
