WATERFORD, Ohio (WOUB) – The Trimble Tomcats traveled to Waterford on a frigid Friday night, attempting to improve their record. After a hard-fought close game, the Wildcats took the win at home 54-47.
While both teams were slow on scoring in the first quarter, they both clearly came to play. Waterford had multiple players score field goals early on and a three-pointer from Reese Lang gave them a quick lead, not to mention the near countless rebounds they were getting. Ending the first 13-3, Waterford established their dominance early and it was going to take some work from Trimble to come back.
Trimble began to find a rhythm early in the second, although that was mostly seen on offense to start. The game was dominated by incredible three-pointer performances, with Lang getting two and Finn Pennock getting one this quarter.
Luke Orsbourne of Trimble was able to get a three-pointer of his own along with a field goal, but it wasn’t enough to take the lead. Waterford ended the half 22-12, but Trimble’s performance promised a fight.
The third quarter began chippy, foul after foul showing the fierceness in both teams. Trimble came at it with all the force they could, coming back in points and for the first time in the game really making some progress on defense.
They got within one possession and took a timeout, and after that Waterford put up seven points, including a three-pointer by Pennock seconds after play resumed. The quarter ended 37-27, Waterford maintaining their lead, but Trimble hot on their trail.
Trimble would continue to attempt to ride the high of that energy, eventually tying the game up. Waterford would continue to dominate on offense, however, and after critical missed shots from Trimble, Waterford would win 54-47.
The Trimble boys have a chance to improve their record at home against Belpre Feb. 5, and Waterford have their rivalry game against Fort Frye on Feb. 3.
