Baseball: Ohio Wins Home Opener 12-3 In Convincing Fashion

Bob Wren Stadium opened its gates Tuesday afternoon to the tune of an Ohio Bobcats win, as the baseball team took down West Virginia State 12-3.
Ohio picked up its fourth win of the season in dominating fashion. The offense got rolling early, allowing the ‘Cats to coast to victory to wrap up the final few innings.
Jensen Painter led the offense going 4-4 with two doubles, a single and a three-run home run. The senior outfielder finished with five runs batted in.
“My approach was just to keep it simple,” said Painter. “I got good pitches to hit and I didn’t really let that go. If you only get one good pitch to hit in an at-bat, you want to capitalize on that.”
Ohio padded its lead late in the game with Painter’s RBI single in the eighth.
The ‘Cats showed their supremacy, however, in the opening four innings of the ball game. Ohio scored ten runs in that span, including six in the second inning.
Painter’s blast came as a part of that monstrous second inning for the Bobcats’ offense. Doubles from Ben Otto and Ethan Newton drove in a pair of runs. Doug Holmes and Seth Streich each singled, putting them in position for Painter’s three-run shot. Ohio scored all its second-inning runs with two outs.
Shane Dedig (1-0) picked up the win for the ‘Cats, allowing only two earned runs in five innings of work.
This win is Ohio’s third in the past four games. The ‘Cats hope to keep the victory train rolling this weekend when they open up a three-game series with the Oakland Golden Grizzlies. Friday’s contest is the second in a nine-game homestand for Ohio.
