Council Wants Levy For Street Lighting

Nelsonville City Council is moving to generate some more money.

It wants to put a 1.5 mil levy on the ballot in November.

City Law Director Garry Hunter says if voters approve, income from the levy will be used for street lighting.

The proposal, which is labeled a current expenses levy, would generate $75,000 a year.

The first-step vote Monday night to get the levy on the ballot was six to one.

Hunter says the old street light levy failed in 2007.

He also says the Nelsonville auditor reported the city right now is spending more money than it's bringing in.

This, despite the fact that more than $100,000 in cuts have been made.

To balance the budget, the city will have to use some of the approximately $500,000 it had left over from 2011.
