Toledo Among 10 Division I Basketball Programs Facing Postseason Ban

The NCAA released the Academic Progress Rate on Wednesday, which means different things for athletics departments across the nation. For Ohio, its means nothing but good things as 13 of the Bobcats’ 16 sports have multi-year APR rates of 970 or above.
The scores are the best multi-year scores for field hockey, wrestling, women’s basketball, softball, and indoor and outdoor track since 2004-2005. No Ohio sports will face penalty for low or substandard APR scores.
In fact, the field hockey, wrestling and volleyball programs at Ohio have the highest scores for their respective sports in the Mid American Conference.
Not all other MAC programs fared as well as Ohio in the ratings. According to the NCAA, the Toledo men’s basketball program is one of 10 NCAA Division I basketball programs that are ineligible for the post season.
MAC Commissioner Dr. Jon A. Steinbrecher issued this statement regarding Toledo’s ban in April, “I am extremely disappointed with the NCAA’s denial of the University of Toledo’s appeal of the men’s basketball post-season ban for the 2012-13 season. The Mid-American Conference and member institutions want to be held to the highest academic standards and is fully supportive of tying academic performance to athletic participation, however, Toledo is not an institution that should be punished for doing the right thing. “
There are a total of 15 Division I teams ineligible this year, compared to eight last year. In addition to the 10 basketball programs, there are three football programs, one men’s soccer team and one wrestling team. The penalty is assessed if the team scores lower than a 900 on the rating system.
The APR measures the eligibility, retention and graduation of Division I student athletes. The score is a multi-year rating, meaning it is based on the average of scores from the academic years spanning between 2007-2011. See Ohio's APR scores below.
