Appalachian Power says restoring service will be a multi-day effort but it can't provide an estimate.
MonPower says it could be a week before service is restored to customers in the hardest-hit areas.
Cooling shelters have been set up across the state for residents needing refuge from 90-degree heat.
Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin says state officials are working as quickly as they can to get power restored and to get water and generators into areas where they're needed.
He asks West Virginians to look out for each other until electricity is restored. He says residents should check on others, particularly the elderly, to ensure they're OK.
