< < Back to graphic-novels-youth-exhibit-artist-panel-week-dairy-barnThe Dairy Barn Arts Center’s exhibit Beyond Words: The Art of the Graphic Novel comes to a close this Sunday, Sept. 9.
Since opening last May, the show has featured more than 40 international graphic novelists, including works from the Wychaert Collection, David Mack, Carol Tyler and Barron Storey.
This week also includes the opening of the Where Art and Visual Arts Meet Youth Exhibit on Thursday at 7 p.m.
“We’re pleased to recognize all artists that submitted entries into our youth exhibit and pleased to be able to recognize their effort,” said Jane Forrest Redfern, director of the Dairy Barn Arts Center.
At noon this Saturday, The Dairy Barn will host a panel discussion featuring three area graphic novelists: Sandy Plunkett, Erica Magnus and Carol Tyler.
Plunkett, an Athens resident, was raised in New York City in the 1960s and 1970s. A self-taught illustrator and comic book artist, he began drawing for Marvel Comics at age 18. Plunkett’s other work includes a stint at DC Comics and illustrating countless posters, album covers and political cartoons. His book, The World of a Wayward Comic Book Artist, was published by Swallow Press in 2010.
Although Erica Magnus had a 20-year publishing career as an author, illustrator and freelance artist, she entered the world of graphic novels via Jennifer Granville, then of the OU School of Film, now director of the School of Film at Metropolitan University, Leeds, England. Magnus worked on several OU film projects before relocating to Los Angeles in 2006. Since then, she has worked with OU alumnus Jordan Blum, writer and Executive Assistant at FOX, on several screenplays and graphic novels.
Chicago-born Carol Tyler is an internationally recognized American cartoonist, educator, painter and comedian known for her award-winning autobiographical stories. Currently, Tyler is teaching a class titled “Comics, Graphic Novels & Sequential Art” at the University of Cincinnati. Tyler is a Ohio Arts Council-sponsored Residency Artist and was recently awarded a 2011 OAC Individual Excellence Award. She will give a workshop titled “Telling Your Story” following the panel discussion.
