Nelsonville-York Notches First Win
< < Back toBerne Union wasted no time in exciting their home crowd in Friday night’s contest against Nelsonville-York, but that excitement was quickly detained in the 62-21 victory for the Buckeyes.
Rockets head coach Jason Sanders confidently called for a wide receiver reverse pass to quarterback Jordan Blevins on the first play from scrimmage. The result was an early 7-0 lead.
The Nelsonville-York offense immediately countered with a long run by quarterback Joey Young. From that moment, it was Young’s time to shine.
In the first half alone, Young had three rushing touchdowns along with an 18-yard touchdown pass to tight end Kyle Freer. Young, along with great field position, was the key to Dave Boston, Jr.’s run-first offense.
Young finished the night with only five rushes and five passes, but accounted for nearly half the team’s offense. He finished with 160 yards on the ground and 75 through the air. The Buckeyes racked up 519 total yards – 444 rushing and 75 passing.
The team’s success cannot be fully credited to the offense. The defense and special teams came up big for the Buckeyes.
The stout Nelsonville-York defense, led by Austin McCulloch and Neil Polley, contained Blevins and the Rockets’ flex offense the rest of the night. Berne Union ended the game with 211 total yards along with numerous three-and-outs.
The Berne Union punt coverage had a tough time containing the Buckeyes’ returners, particularly Emmitt Reed. Reed’s return in the second quarter set the offense up beautifully for a nine-yard touchdown run by Young.
This victory marked Nelsonville-York’s first of the season, and they are hoping to carry this momentum into next week’s game as they travel to Bidwell to play River Valley.
