Williamstown got back to its 2011 form in a 49-7 win over South Harrison at home Friday.
The Yellow Jackets, who won 13 straight games last year on their way to the West Virginia Class-A state final, had been struggling, going 1-2 to start the 2012 season. Williamstown was scoring only 24 points per game while giving up nearly 30 points per contest through three games. But the Jackets took Friday’s home opener as an opportunity to turns things around by getting back to the basics.
Williamstown came right out of the locker room with stout defense and an explosive running attack. Trace Hart and Dakota Watson led the charge offensively, combining for 187 yards and four touchdowns on just six carries in the first half.
Hart scored on runs of 72 and 67 yards on back-to-back possessions to give Williamstown momentum early. The junior ended the game with 152 yards and two touchdowns on four carries. Watson finished with 162 yards and three touchdowns on six carries.
Quarterback Jake Tracewell improved his efficiency Friday, going 5-for-9 for 104 yards and a touchdown and exercising his game-management skills. The junior had support from the offensive line, the run game and the defense, as Williamstown controlled the game from the start.
With the win, Williamstown improves to 2-2 on the year. The Yellow Jackets return to the road next Friday at Ravenswood.
