On paper, the Nelsonville-York Buckeyes and the Logan Chieftains are just two teams struggling to compete in their respective conferences, making for a lackluster football game.

Don’t be fooled.

There’s a long rivalry between these two teams. 13 miles separates the two high schools and plenty of Buckeye fans will make the short trip down US-33 West to Logan. These storied programs don’t play as often as in the past, but the bitterness is still present.

Both teams have struggled this season which is uncustomary for their respective communities.

The Buckeyes started 2012 with two straight losses: a nail biter against Trimble in week one and a lopsided 32-6 loss to Newark Catholic.

But after a change at the quarterback position, Nelsonville was able to even their record against Berne Union and River Valley.

Logan is still searching for their stride.

The Chieftains have had four very tough games to open their 2012 campaign. Logan opened the season with four straight losses against four solid teams: Lancaster, Northland, Newark and Jonathan Alder

The battle tested Logan squad is looking to get on the right track and the way they will find success is on the shoulders of their offensive line and running back Corey McCarty.  They’ve shown signs of explosion this season once the offense syncs up and hums on all cylinders.

Expect this one to be a shootout. Both teams can light up the scoreboard and display offensive brilliance. For Nelsonville-York to avoid losing to a winless team, Clint Handa and Joe Young need to perform at their best. It may take another 50 point performance on offense to top Logan.

Regardless of who ends up winning, both of these teams are solid. A win on Friday for either team could be the spark that launches them into title contention.
