Despite their Homecoming spirit and the pride oozing from the student section, the Belpre Golden Eagles dropped their record to 1-5 on the season with a loss to Eastern 48-20.
The Eastern Eagles asserted their dominance early with a 73-yard touchdown by quarterback Joey Scowden, putting the Eagles up 7-0 at the start of the first quarter.
With the flame ignited, Eastern’s defensive lineman Tyler Barber intercepted a pass from Belpre’s freshman quarterback Tavian Miller.
Scowden, who had 15 carries for 262 yards and 2 touchdowns, took the opportunity and barreled his team down the field, completing multiple first downs with his effective running game and bringing the Eagles within Belpre territory. From there running back Ethan Nottingham dodged tackles and raked in a 28-yard touchdown.
With a chance to get some momentum rolling, Belpre had a solid 40-yard return but unfortunately for them the drive didn’t progress and they were unable to get some numbers on the board. Eastern took over on downs but quality tackles by the Golden Eagles kept them idle.
Belpre appeared to be getting something together with a blocked punt but Eastern’s defensive back Daschle Facemyer wasn’t going to let that happen as he snatched the ball from the air for an interception. Belpre was given another chance to produce when Eastern fumbled the ball, but despite their homecoming prowess the Golden Eagles were unable to convert and the quarter ended with Eastern up 14-0.
Eastern went on to dominate throughout the second quarter as well, adding three touchdowns to their lengthy lead. Wide receiver Zach Scowden ran it in on a reverse and wide receiver Max Camahan followed with a 50-yard touchdown. The Eagles rushed for 439 yards and forced 3 turnovers on the night.
Despite their inability to make things happen in the first half, Belpre was not lacking in effort and was able to convert in the second half. Running back Manney Tullius accumulated 127 yards on 21 carriers and scored all three touchdowns for Belpre. Miller converted 8-of-15 passes and threw for 119 yards with 2 interceptions.
Belpre goes on to play South Gallia next week and Eastern will take on Trimble at home.
