The official press release states that the award goes to the quarterback who "encapsulates all that is positive in college sports by going beyond completion percentage and touchdowns to also value character, citizenship, integrity, and those who honor the game."
Tettleton joins 14 of the nation’s top passers on the list, including the likes of Matt Barkley, Landry Jones, AJ McCarron and Geno Smith. The Ohio signal caller is the only quarterback representing a non-BCS school to make the final 15.
Tettleton, a redshirt junior, leads the MAC’s highest scoring offense and holds the third-highest passer efficiency rating in the conference through five starts. He has 1193 passing yards with 12 total touchdowns on the season compared to just one interception. Tettleton currently sits tied for first in school history in career touchdown passes with 38. He has also led Ohio to a 6-0 start for the first time since 1968, and the Bobcats currently sit just outside the AP Poll top 25 at No. 26.
The Unitas Golden Arm Award will be presented on Friday, December 7 in Baltimore, Md. Previous winners of the award include Peyton Manning (1997), Carson Palmer (2002), Matt Ryan (2007) and Andrew Luck (2011). Proceeds from the award go to the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Education Foundation, supporting underprivileged young student-athletes in Maryland and Kentucky.
