Indonesian Art Exhibit At Alden Library
< < Back to indonesian-art-exhibit-alden-libraryOhio University's Alden Library will present a new exhibition of wood block prints on Thursday, Oct. 18, along with a presentation from two visiting artists.
The artists, Sergina and Sudandyo Aprilianto (known as Lilik), are from an artist collective called Taring Padi.
They create work that is socially and politically oriented, focusing on issues faced by marginalized populations in Indonesia.
Sergina has been an active member of Taring Padi since 2009 and is based in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.
Lilik, who has worked with the group since 2004, is currently based in Ann Arbor, Mich.
The pair will present a discussion regarding the history, philosophy and current activities of Taring Padi.
The collection of Taring Padi prints to be displayed was purchased by Dr. Elizabeth Collins. Dr. Collins is a professor of Classics and World Religions as well as a faculty member of the Southeast Asian Studies program at Ohio University.
Each print will be accompanied by an explanatory text. These texts highlight the context in which the print was created, while also touching on cultural references and historical information regarding corruption, violence and politics in Indonesia.
Thursday's discussion will begin at 6 p.m. in Alden Library's Friends of the Library Room (319). Following the presentation, there will be an exhibition opening and reception from 7:30-8:30 p.m. on the first floor of Alden Library near the Southeast Asia collection.
The event is free and open to the public.
