Opponents Of Fracking Upset Over Lack Of Public Hearing
< < Back to ?p=7671An anti-fracking group met with Athens County Commissioners Tuesday to discuss the lack of a public hearing on an injection well in Rome Township.
According to Roxanne Groff, with the Athens County Fracking Action Network, a number of people wrote letters to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources asking for a public hearing.
Groff also explained her disappointment in what she calls an "absurd little form note" from ODNR that seemed to indicate no one read the letters.
Madeline ffitch, the women who chained herself to the Ginsberg Well last year, was also present at the meeting.
ffitch said that in a recent April inspection of the well ODNR inspectors found recurring problems with faulty pressure gages and evidence of possible leakage.
ffitch also said drillers in Pennsylvania have sent almost 43-thousand barrels of waste fluids to the well during the last half of 2011.
Nearly 1.8 million gallons of out of state waste has been injected into the Ginsberg well in a six month period.
"High volumes of injection waste has now been linked to earthquakes in these areas where we have never had earthquakes before," she said. "What we are talking about here is an entire years worth of out-of-state waste being injected within a six-month period during which time they could not even take a test of the pressure."
Commissioner Lenny Eliason said under Ohio law they are not required to hold a public hearing.
