Superintendent: District Future Secure Thanks To Levy
< < Back to superintendent-district-future-secure-thanks-levyAthens City Schools Superintendent Carl Martin says he is confident that the recently renewed emergency levy will help stabilize the district financially and get education back on track.
Athens voters approved the levy Tuesday, which would provide the district with $3.7 million a year in general operating funds.
The levy, which was originally passed in 2004 and renewed in 2008, received a five-year renewal this week.
Martin expressed gratitude to the voters for supporting the emergency operating levy, which helped the district maintain 13 percent of its general fund budget.
Martin says the board has had to take measures into its own hands due to the cuts to school funding in Ohio as a result of the economic crisis.
“Governor Kasich has cut school funding severely in order to balance the state budget, and during that time, we had to take measures to deal with the growing deficit,” said Martin.
Martin says he is optimistic this will greatly help Athens City Schools over the next five years.
