Spartans Suffer Another Tough Loss
< < Back to spartans-suffer-another-tough-lossThe Alexander Spartans fought hard in an intense battle against the Wellston Rockets tonight, but the Rockets size as well as speed would get the best of Alexander as they lost 56-50.
Wellston came out strong against the Spartans, outscoring them 19-6 in the first quarter and taking advantage of their weak passing game. Alexander only knocked in 2-of-15 shots in the first quarter and was blown away by Wellston’s speed and ability to drive the ball straight to the hoop.
This was not the case in the second quarter however, as Alexander bumped up their intensity, kept up with the Rockets speed and even took control of the pace for a period of time. This forced Wellston to take out their big guys and resort to speed but Alexander would still outscore them 21-12 in the second improving their shooting by 48 percent.
The score remained close throughout the rest of the game but Alexander missed key free throws and were unable to convert their opportunistic steals. The Spartans spread their offense and were able to open up the outside shots but unfortunately for them, the shots would not fall. This was not the case for Wellston, as star player Toriano Smith scored 23 points, eight of which were free throws. Justus Ousley also contributed 15 points, six rebounds and five blocks for Wellston.
Braden Jones scored 20 points for Alexander tonight and snatched up seven rebounds. Cory Chapman added eight points and Seth Richardson ended the night with seven points.
The Rockets shot 45 percent from the field tonight and racked up 24 rebounds. Alexander only shot 34 percent but surprisingly only turned the ball over just 6 times compared to Wellston’s 19. Ultimately it was the Rockets ability to knock in shots and make the necessary free throws that allowed them to pull out the win
