Ohio Drops Fifth Of Season, 8-2 To No. 25 Virginia Tech
< < Back to ohio-drops-fifth-season-8-2-no-25-virginia-techThe struggles on the mound continued for the Ohio Bobcats as starter Jake Miller allowed 13 hits in a 8-2 loss to the No. 25 Virginia Tech Hokies. The Bobcats (1-5) have struggled all season on both sides of the ball and those issues were exacerbated Friday in Cary, N.C.
Miller (1-2) allowed eight runs and earned just one strikeout in the loss. The freshman is one of three newly minted starting pitchers for the ‘Cats this season.
It appeared Ohio may have had a shot to stay alive in the top half of the second inning. With the bases loaded and no outs, Dan Schmidt and Nick Squires drew walks to plate a pair of Ohio runs. But the offensive well ran dry for the ‘Cats and they only finished with four hits. The Bobcats are earning less than seven hits per game while allowing 10.
Hokies starter Eddie Campbell (1-0) allowed only two of those four Bobcat hits, striking out 10 despite four walks in the second inning, which put Ohio on the board.
The tie did not last long as Virginia Tech rallied in the bottom half of the frame to go up 4-2. The Hokies added three more in the third and one in the sixth.
Miller’s loss comes after his best game of the season to date against Boston College. In that game he pitched eight innings earning seven strikeouts, only allowing one run on three hits.
That game remains the lone bright spot in Ohio pitching this season. The Bobcats’ hurlers have given up 33 runs—32 of them earned—on 60 hits on the season.
Ohio looks to recover and begin the climb back to .500 Friday at Noon against Rhode Island.
