< < Back to softball-gellerman-ohio-blast-seattle-7-4With the help of catcher Lauren Gellerman’s bat, Ohio (12-3) downed the Seattle Redhawks, 7-4. Ohio’s standout senior catcher became the program’s all-time home run leader, as she blasted her 28th home run of her college career.
The moment came in the top of the third inning, with the Bobcats down 1-0. Down two strikes in the count to Seattle pitcher Richelle Ashburn, Gellerman crushed a ball over the fences. With one swing of the bat, Gellerman drove in two runs and the ‘Cats went up 2-1 on the Redhawks.
In the fourth inning, Kaylin Clarke hit another home run for the Bobcats and put her team up 3-1. Seattle responded to Ohio’s sudden surge with two runs of its own. Isabella Gironimo tripled and drove two runs to knot up the score at 3-3.
First baseman Caitlin Colvin hit a single through the right side of the Seattle defense and drove in Gellerman to put the Green and White up 4-3 in the fifth.
Ohio tacked on another two runs in the sixth inning on a fielder’s choice and a fly out to deep center to go up 6-3 on the Redhawks.
Following a home run in the bottom of the sixth from Seattle slugger Lisa Maulden, Clarke hit her second bomb of the day in the top of the seventh. With her second home run, Clarke set the score at 7-4 in favor of the Bobcats.
Unfortunately for the Redhawks they could get nothing going against Ohio pitcher Lauren McClary in the bottom of the seventh, and the ‘Cats took the game.
Ohio will take part in the UW Husky Classic starting Friday with an 8:30 p.m. matchup against Yale.
