PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT

For Immediate Release

73rd Annual Memorial Day Service returns to New Marshfield Monday May 27

New Marshfield Ohio –

The Gilham – Frank VFW Post 8804 73rd Annual Memorial Day Service is set for Monday, May 27th beginning at 10 AM. The Memorial Day service will support local heritage by honoring interned veterans in the New Marshfield cemetery by members of VFW Post 8804 with assistance from the Waterloo Township Volunteer Fire Department and Boy Scout Troop 71. The years event is part the 73rd annual organized celebration in Athens County’s community of New Marshfield involving combat veterans and families. The annual service offers entertainment by Alexander High School Marching Band, Charlie & Celia Lewis and Ron Baughman.

Many members of Gilham – Frank VFW Post 8804 and residents of Waterloo Township are direct decedents of the areas founding pioneer families. People since 1787 have gathered to bury their war dead in the township making it one of the oldest places in the United States to continue to do the tradition uninterrupted by time. On May 5th 1868 General John Logan Commander in Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic ordered that all veteran grave sites nationwide were to be strewn with flowers and decorated and because of Logan’s Order #11 all of Waterloo Townships 24 cemeteries have been cleaned flagged and marked since then by veterans families and friends.

Ohio Department of VFW Commander David Root will be the honored Guest Speaker for the service and will assist in Gilham – Frank VFW Post 8804 Sacred Grave Site Service for the over 1000 buried veterans at the cemetery.  For the first time the Memorial Day Service will be held in the old cemetery’s Garden of Gethsemane area.
