NAMI Athens Speaker Series at the Athens Public Library
“I Am Not a Monster: Schizophrenia”
Approximately one percent of the U.S. population – including many students at universities such as OU – have schizophrenia. Terribly stigmatized and misunderstood, the disorder can ruin one’s life. However, increasingly, many people today are standing up to the challenge and unfair stigma surrounding the disorder, accepting treatment, going into recovery, and living a productive and fulfilling life. This is certainly the case of Cecilia McGough, a Penn State student who, in good command of her schizophrenia, has founded a national organization – Students with Schizophrenia – which seeks to destigmatize schizophrenia and provide a safe venue in which students recovering from that disorder can organize. For a preview of her talk, listen to her NAMI interview at namiathensohio.org and follow the radio icon.
Nurses can submit social work certificates to the nursing board for full credit.
