Ohio's Lauren Gellerman steps into the batter's box in game one against Ohio State. The senior had three home runs in the doubleheader against the Buckeyes on Tuesday.

Ohio catcher Lauren Gellerman was awarded Mid-American Conference Scholar Athlete of the Week honors on Thursday. It was the second time the senior has received this honor.

Gellerman is majoring in Integrated Mathematics and currently carries a 3.904 grade-point average. Her academic prowess was also recognized in the past two seasons, in which she earned Academic All-MAC Honorable Mention.

“I just take my school seriously, so it’s great to get recognized for something other than just hitting home runs,” Gellerman said after practice on Thursday.

Ohio’s backstop has been on a tear in the past week. In her last six games she hit seven home runs. In 18 at-bats Gellerman accumulated 10 hits for a .556 average. In those 18 at-bats she had nine RBI, accounted for nine runs, and did not strike out.

In a doubleheader against Ohio State on Tuesday, Gellerman hit three blasts over the fences. She hit two solo shots in game one and her third game in game two. No. 25 had just one at-bat in the second game because she was walked in her other three plate appearances.

In addition to her academic awards she has also been named the MAC East Player of the Week three times this year. Unfortunately, Thursday’s award will be the last of its kind for Gellerman. A student-athlete can only be named Scholar Athlete of the Week just twice in a semester.

Gellerman and the Bobcats will be back in action on Friday, April 12. They will be taking on the Miami RedHawks in a doubleheader.
