Soccer: Ohio tripped up by Toledo
< < Back to soccer-ohio-tripped-toledoThe Bobcats opened up their weekend road trip with a 2-0 loss at the hands of the Toledo Rockets. Looking for its third consecutive MAC road victory, Ohio (6-7, 3-2 MAC) couldn’t reel in the Rockets (6-5-1, 5-0 MAC), who continued their hot start in MAC play.
Toledo struck in the second minute, stunning the Bobcats with a goal from Nicole Gyurgyik. The goal came off of a corner kick that Toledo won in its first possession of the match.
The Bobcats looked to strike back with an equalizer, but spoiled their chances until Rachael Philpot finally put a shot on goal to challenge Toledo’s Vicki Traven in the 28th minute. Traven, last week’s MAC Defensive Player of the Week, proved up to the challenge, a theme that would carry on through the match.
The Rockets extended their lead with a goal from Megan Blake in the 34th minute. From there, Traven would protect the Rocket’s two goal lead into halftime.
Ohio struggled to create chances in the second half and was only able to put one shot on goal. The chance came in the 74th minute on a strike from Kelsey Pichel.
Ohio’s Mattie Liston didn’t allow a goal in the second half and ended with four saves.
The Bobcats entered the game as the MAC East Division leader. Even with the loss, Ohio can salvage the weekend with a strong performance Sunday at Ball State.
