Trooper Donald Edgington of the Ohio State Highway Patrol post in Portsmouth was examining a crash scene when he was hit in the back by a vehicle's right mirror.
Investigators say the driver of the vehicle, Dorothy Hoop, 84, of West Portsmouth, was not traveling at a high rate of speed when she struck the trooper.
Edgington had a previous surgery where eight screws were put in his back.
He was taken to Grant Hospital for precautionary measures.
