Thursday night’s contest between the Nelsonville-York Lady Buckeyes and the Athens Lady Bulldogs wasn’t much of a contest after the Lady Bulldogs pulled away in the third quarter and posted up a win over the Lady Buckeyes 47-34.

The Lady ‘Dogs got off to a hot start stealing the ball from Nelsonville-York three consecutive times and putting up a quick five points, including a 3-pointer from freshman Dominique Doseck. But, that would be all the excitement seen in the first quarter. The first eight minutes ended with only six points for Nelsonville-York and nine for Athens.

Athens picked up the pace in the next eight minutes with senior Elena Lein leading the way. The lady ‘Dogs fed Lein the ball and she delivered every time. And, she would continue to deliver throughout the rest of the game racking up 16 total points. The Lady Buckeye’s kept it close with Athens until the final few minutes of the second quarter when Lein and her team put up seven unanswered points to lead 22-14 at the half.

Although the Lady Bucks were only down eight starting the second half, Athens would run away with its lead in the third quarter. The Lady Bulldogs were able to capitalize on consecutive NY turnovers. Add those multiple turnovers to a five-minute shooting drought for the Lady Buckeyes, and find Athens up by 17 points. Finally, with two minutes to go in the third quarter, NY ended the drought, but those two points wouldn’t be enough to help cut down Athens’ lead. The Lady Bulldogs headed into the final quarter up 37-20.

Lein would shine some more in the fourth quarter scoring eight of her 16, and adding an all-ball block to her stats. Nelsonville-York tried to run with it in the final minutes of the game, but were only able to cut Athens’ lead down by five.

With a win of 47-34, the Lady Bulldogs improved their record to 4-2, while the Lady Buckeyes fall to 3-3. Athens hits the road again on December 19 to face Jackson, and Nelsonville-York heads to Wellston on December 17.
