Career Center Aims To Help Veterans In Job Search
< < Back to career-center-aims-help-veterans-job-searchSearching for a job in today's economy is hard for anyone, but for veterans, the search can be even tougher.
Tim Taylor is the Operations Manager for the AMVETS Career Center. He says the unemployment rate for veterans is 12 percent, compared to 8 percent unemployment in Ohio statewide.
For younger veterans, Taylor says the rate is even higher: 18 percent.
Taylor says often service members don't know how to translate their military skills into every-day terminology, so that's where the career center comes in. "What we do offer is career assessment, resume and cover letter writing. We also offer interviewing techniques and job search tactics. We can also offer online training for veterans," said Taylor.
Often, employers are concerned veterans may have psychological issues from previous combat situations, such as post-traumatic stress disorder, says Taylor. But he says there are so many benefits to hiring a veteran. "They are hardworking and disciplined, leadership and management skills. There are tax incentives to hire veterans with the Hire Heroes Act, which will save employers thousands of dollars. In some cases, it's a law for companies to hire veterans, especially if they have a federal contract where they have to have a certain percentage of employees as veterans," said Taylor.
AMVETS Career Centers are located in Athens, Albany, Logan and Jackson.
