Genesis Gets Designation Of Level Three Trauma Center
< < Back toA Zanesville Healthcare System is now a level three trauma center.
Genesis Healthcare System received the official designation this month, which had been provisionally granted by the Ohio Department of Health in September 2010.
Trauma Services Director Dr. Stuart Chow says trauma surgeons from the American College of Surgeons visited the hospital's emergency department in 2011 to review how well the trauma staff was taking care of patients.
Results of the review led to the ACS verifying Genesis was providing safe and appropriate trauma care and deemed the hospital able to take care of trauma patients in the region.
Before Genesis was verified as a level three center, anyone with a traumatic injury was required to be sent to Columbus for treatment.
Now patients can stay in Zanesville for treatment and observation.
Dr. Chow says he is ecstatic about the designation. "We had two goals when starting this program," He says. "One was to provide the best care possible for our patients. The second goal is to maintain the patients here in Zanesville and I think we accomplished both."
Dr. Chow says designation is re-evaluated every three years to ensure hospital staff are maintaining quality care.
