Swimming/Diving: Bobcats Dominate Mountaineers

The Bobcats started off their double dual meet weekend against the West Virginia Mountaineers. Ohio’s last win was against Marshall, with a final score of 154-78.
The Mountaineers came to Athens with a 3-3 record; they left with 3-4 after the Cats dominated the meet. The final score of the meet was 178.5 to 119.5.
The Bobcats dove head first into the meet, winning the first event, the 200 Yard Medley Relay, with a time of 1:43.80. West Virginia was just a few seconds behind at 1:46.13. Head coach Greg Werner elaborated on the teamwork involved with this specific event.
“There is a bit of teamwork that goes into the Medley Relay,” Werner said. “The relay exchanges between the swimmers and work take lots of practice.”
Last week’s MAC Swimmer of the Week was Ohio's Laurin Williams. She proved herself again this week by winning Friday's second event. In the 1,000-Yard Freestyle Williams swam 20 laps in a whopping time of 10:04.80.
“We chose to submit Laurin because she had the best time of the season for the 500 freestyle, we see her as a stronger swimmer and the MAC saw that too,” Werner said.
Rachel Stearns brought the most wins for the Cats, aiding in the win of the first Medley Relay, to the Women 100 Yard Backstroke, Women 200 Yard Backstroke and the Women 200 Yard IM. Werner believes it’s more than just good genes that make Stearns an excellent swimmer.
“She’s doing the extra work,” Werner said. “She’s been coming in early, doing extra work and that’s what you see very successful people do.”
The team will be hosting Ball State Saturday for senior night.
“I’m feeling good going into tomorrow’s meet after tonight,” Werner said. “But you never know, Ball State’s rest tonight may have an advantage over us tomorrow.”
