It's far too easy for young people in Athens to slap on blinders when it comes to acknowledging the poverty that edges into Ohio University’s campus.

However, thanks to a group of particularly ambitious area artists and musicians, a very special event will be taking place this weekend to spread awareness about the local food movement and developing sustainable farming in Appalachian Ohio.

Several local venues will host events collectively referred to as Athens Community Arts Smörgåsbord 2012, all in an effort to raise money and resources for Community Food Initiatives (CFI).

CFI is a non-profit organization that has been working diligently for 20 years to plant community gardens, preach and teach self-sustainability and hold workshops focusing on topics like basic horticulture and composting.

"Everyone involved in organizing all the events are really great," said Badger Johnson, CFI’s Community Gardens/Food and Gardens Education Coordinator.

"It’s just this group of local DIY artists that get together every year and put together an event. And it’s not even so much the money that they raise; it’s the way that they resonate with the community."

Although a great deal of the festivities planned for this weekend are based around local music, great live performances aren’t the only thing to look forward to. A poetry reading, a food drive, a massive finger-painting mural, and an art show are all in the works for Smörgåsbord 2012.

Everything kicks off Thursday night at Casa Cantina with a food drive, followed by performances by Infinite Zero, Founding Fathers and Homemade Drugs around 10 p.m. If at all possible, the audience is encouraged to come in drag.

Friday night, The Union will host a poetry reading and art show at 7 p.m., followed by free food. Music from Sega Genocide, The D-Rays, Heroes of History and Zapano gets underway at 9 p.m.

On Saturday at 9 p.m., the music moves to the Smiling Skull Saloon, with performances from Magna Drag, Shafer St. Fugitive and Blood Brothers from South Korea.

The night will be capped off by a dance party hosted by Athens' own DJ Barticus at the Institute. Visit the Athens Community Arts Smörgåsbord Facebook page for more information.
