The Athens City School District laid off a principal and three teachers Thursday night.

It also abolished 16 aide, cashier, cook and other positions.

The action was largely due to the board’s previous decision to close Chauncey Elementary school.

Chauncey Principal Peggy Williams was among those let go.

The three teachers affected by the Reduction in Force are at East, West and The Plains Elementaries as the board shuffled personnel around the district to absorb teachers from Chauncey.

Superintendent Carl Martin says the job abolishments will result in “some” layoffs but he could not immediately say how many.

Chauncey is being shut down to cut costs and because of declining enrollment, although the building will be used for the district’s pre-school  program.
