West Virginia is seeking federal assistance to individuals and businesses to help them recover from recent severe storms that ripped across the state.

Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin on Thursday requested assistance from several federal programs, including disaster unemployment assistance, legal services and supplemental food assistance, as well as Small Business Administration loans.

If granted, the aid would help people and businesses in 24 counties: Boone, Calhoun, Doddridge, Fayette, Gilmer, Greenbrier, Jackson, Kanawha, Logan, McDowell, Mercer, Mingo, Monroe, Nicholas, Pocahontas, Putnam, Raleigh, Ritchie, Roane, Tyler, Webster, Wetzel, Wirt and Wood Counties.

The federal government already has granted a disaster declaration for West Virginia, which will cover emergency work, repair and replacement of public facilities in 45 counties for damage sustained in the June 29 storms.
