Ohio Shuts Out Radford In Rain Delayed Game

After two long lightning delays, and three and a half hours time, Ohio came out victorious over Radford by a score of 9-0. Now with a 2-1 record for the season, Ohio hopes to use this game as a springboard into a big season.
“It was challenging early on, going on and off,” commented head coach Neil Macmillan after the game. “That was something that we weren’t really prepared for, but we adapted really well.”
The game began with history being made, as senior Taylor Brown scored just three minutes in and took over fifth on the all-time goal scoring charts at Ohio University.
“I didn’t know about that until a couple days ago, but it’s such an awesome feeling to know that I’m up there with the top players that have been here at Ohio.”
That was Taylor’s only goal of the game though, as the rest of the team stepped up to take the pressure off of her. Among the biggest contributors of the game was a freshman from Argentina, Luli Gomez Teruel, who finished with five goals.
“When it rains, it pours,” said coach Macmillan.
In the first half, Gomez Teruel managed to score off of a penalty shot, and once off a big feed by the net from Brown. Brown ended up assisting on three of Gomez Teruel’s goals, and made a highlight reel play putting the pass perfectly between the goaltender’s legs and Gomez Teruel’s stick.
“She did great,” commented Brown on the big performance. “In practice we usually find each other as well, and usually she’s always there in that right spot, and I’m able to find her.”
So far this season Ohio has been able to prove itself as a significant force. Despite losing to seventh-ranked Syracuse on Sunday, the Bobcats fought hard and brought it all together.
“Coming off that loss against Syracuse, we had a really tough week of practice,” said Brown. “We really put things into perspective and we just came out here with everything we had. I think we really capitalized on everything that we worked on.”
The defense was staggering as well; Radford only managed to take three shots in the entire game. The shots all came off of penalty corners, and Radford was unable to capitalize. As a result, sophomore goaltender Brittany Walker notched her first career shutout after stepping in to replace last year’s starter Jen McGill, who left quite the mark.
“We’ve always had the ability to execute, but I think today we just stepped it up another level,” Brown said.
“Full credit to them, they fought,” said coach Macmillan on the Radford squad. “They’re a young, young team. They had two juniors who started, no seniors, and the majority of the team is sophomores.”
The Bobcats next head to Bloomington to face off with No. 23 Louisville and Indiana next weekend. Afterward they’ll make another home stand against 15th ranked Ohio State.
