A 41-year-old Athens County man who has spent nearly 20 years in prison for the 1992 murder of his girlfriend is expected to be denied parole, following his most recent parole hearing on Thursday.

Michael Eckels was 22 years old when he pleaded to a charge of murder in March 1993 in the Athens County Court of Common Pleas. He was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison and incarcerated at the Allen Oakwood Correctional Institution in Lima, OH.

Michael Davis, a spokesperson for the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections, said the parole board recommended that Eckels remain in prison until October 2015, at which time he will be up for parole again.

Davis said it is unclear when the board will issue its final recommendation, but it is expected within the coming days.

Eckels was last seen by a parole board in December 2005.
