An Athens County woman accused of killing her 4-year-old stepdaughter was sentenced to life in prison Wednesday.

Judge Michael Ward handed down Ashley Young's sentence in Athens County Common Pleas Court.

She pleaded guilty to five felony charges including murder, aggravated murder, endangering children, tampering with evidence and attempted aggravated possession of drugs.

Investigators say Young choked the girl and slammed her head into the floor in May 2011 in a home in The Plains.

The grandmother of the victim gave a statement to the court.

Family members of Kaylen Young wore shirts reading, "You now have wings of your own" bearing the image of pink wings and gold letters.

Ashley Young, who was sobbing when she entered the courtroom until she left, declined to give a statement.

She is eligible for parole after 20 years. Ward ordered her to have no contact with the family.
