A Lawrence County high school's new facility will have to wait to be finished after thieves took $40,000 worth of copper.

Chesapeake High School's new $3.2 million athletic facility was set to be finished in February.

Lawrence County Sheriff Jeff Lawless said a concession stand building, rest rooms and visitors' locker room were stripped of copper piping.

The thieves also took tools and dropped cinder blocks from the ceiling onto other pipes.

Officials said the project will be delayed another month to recover from the damage.

Lawless said the case is still under investigation.
