Fifth-grade students from elementary schools in Wood County are heading to court for a mock trial.

The students will present their case before Fourth Judicial Circuit Judge J.D. Beane on Thursday in Parkersburg.

The students are from elementary schools in Mineral Wells, Vienna and Parkersburg.

They'll be participating in West Virginia Law Adventure, a civics education program sponsored by the state Supreme Court.

The state Board of Education approved the program for middle and high school students.

The students participating in the mock trial write their own scripts based on one of three criminal case scenarios in the West Virginia Law Adventure rules book.

The case scenarios are designed by the Young Lawyers Section of the West Virginia State Bar.
