Ohio Wrestling’s Cody Walters Named Freshman of the Year
< < Back to ohio-wrestlings-cody-walters-named-freshman-yearAfter a vote by the eight conference coaches, Ohio freshman Cody Walters is named Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year.
The Macedonia, Ohio native finished his red-shirt freshman season in 2013, earning All-America honor's at the NCAA Tournament. He placed 8th in the tournament in the 174 pound weight class.
Walters finished the season 39-5 record.
During the NCAA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, Walters earned a 2-1 decision over Central Michigan's Craig Kelliher, Buffalo's John-Martin Cannon 3-1. He was also victorious over Iowa State's Tanner Weatherman 5-2 before he fell to John Blanton of Illinois 4-3.
Walters was also the MAC Champion at the 174 pound class after a perfect 3-0 record at the MAC Tournament. He became the second straight Ohio wrestler to win the title at the 174 pound weight class. Ohio finished the tournament tied for fifth with Northern Illinois.
Wrestling Coach Brian Smith of Missouri was named Wrestling Coach of the Year and Kent State's Dustin Kilgore was named Wrester of the Year.
