Democrats in the Ohio House are proposing a series of reforms they say will make Gov. John Kasich's private nonprofit job-creation office, JobsOhio, more accountable to the public.

Legislation detailed Thursday would subject JobsOhio to state ethics and public records standards applied to traditional state government agencies, open the agency to public audits and state watchdog investigations, and require web tracking of JobsOhio's finances.

The Republican-led Legislature intentionally exempted JobsOhio from many of the reporting and review requirements Democrats now seek to make the agency more nimble.

Democrats say privacy has made the office vulnerable to corruption as it doles out billions raised through state liquor profits.

The governor's spokesman says JobsOhio is the most transparent public company in Ohio, and employers have responded positively to its business-like approach.
