The Athens County Emergency Management Agency along with the Athens County Local Emergency Planning Committee for hazardous materials (LEPC) will be holding a hazardous materials spill preparedness exercise on June 11th.

The event will be held at the Athens Wasted Water Treatment Plant from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Athens EMA says people living around the plant should expect large numbers of emergency vehicles in the area.

Emergency response agencies from around Athens County will be exercising their capabilites to respond to a hazardous materials spill.

City residents may also receive simulated emergency messages on their telephones or local responders knocking on their door.

All Ohio Counties are required to annually exercise their emergency response plans. Once every four years that exercise must involve the full scale activation and response of local emergency agencies.
