I-64 Lanes Reopened After Wrecks Cleared
< < Back toThe eastbound lanes of Interstate 64 are open again after a 38-vehicle wreck on the Nitro-St. Albans bridge.
The crash Thursday night left 28 people injured, including nine who had to be cut out of their vehicles. Emergency officials said a half dozen suffered serious injuries, but most sustained cuts and bruises.
There were so many people involved in the chain reaction, a bus was called in to transport some from the scene.
Witnesses say the pileup of wrecked vehicles transformed the bridge into a scene from junk yard with dozens of battered cars and trucks.
A sudden rain squall had hit the area before the wrecks.
