The University of Rio Grande men’s soccer team announced the signing of Jaz Stephenson, a goalkeeper, to its 2013 class Monday, according to RioRedStorm.com

Stephenson, who stands at 6-foot-2 and weighs 170 pounds, hails from Boyd County High School in Cannonsburg, Ky., where he was a three-year starter in the box.

As a senior Stephenson allowed 1.7 goals per game and his team went 12-8-1 on the season before losing in overtime in the 16th Region championship game. In his senior season Stephenson earned All-Area honors from the Ashland Dailey Independent along with All-Tournament honors at the Scott County Classic.

In Stephenson’s junior season he helped his team to a 12-5-1 record, allowing just 0.9 goals per game.

The former Boyd County goalkeeper already has a level of familiarity with the RedStorm soccer program. He and his high school teammates have frequented Rio Grande’s soccer camp for several years.

“They’ve seen me play goalkeeper quite a bit,” Stephenson said to Rocky Stanley of DailyIndependent.com. “I’ve been on the All-Star team at camp the past three years.”

According to Rio Grande’s head coach Scott Morrissey, his newest addition will start his college career on Rio’s junior varsity squad.

The RedStorm lost senior goalkeeper Jack Marchant to graduation, but still have Jon Dodson, a junior, on the varsity roster. Currently Stephenson would be the only goalkeeper on the junior varsity roster.

Last season, Rio Grande’s varsity team saw its season end in the NAIA Sweet 16, after a 16-3-1 season. The junior varsity team finished its season with a 3-2-3 record.
