For the month of July, Rick Edwards will serve as the interim superintendent for Federal Hocking Local Schools. The school board approved the change during a special meeting on Friday. Edwards already serves as the superintendent of the Athens-Meigs Educational Service Center.

George Wood retired this year as superintendent and secondary school principal but was rehired as superintendent. As a rehire, he must by law separate from the district for at least one day. Because he is being rehired back into the same position, he must also separate from the district for at least 60 days or forfeit his retirement for those two months, according to the State Teacher Retirement System of Ohio.

Wood decided to separate for just one month and forfeit his retirement for the month of August, said Treasurer Bruce Steenrod.

“His feeling was that August is too important of a month for him to be away,” Steenrod said.

Steenrod added that he doesn’t foresee Edwards needing to take action on anything. No actions are expected, and July’s board meeting was cancelled. Edwards is available, though, in the event anything does comes up, he said.

Wood will return in August with a reduced salary. His new salary will be $57,000. It was previously $94,972.
